it had been four years since juxtaposition, radians last record. chimeric is not a polished album. within the context it is raw, broken, even dark sometimes. steady, multiple rhythms, layered on top of each other disappear into chaos and turn back into discreet structures in the next moment. references of rock music, executed with the precision of a sequencer, mutated, restructured. a lot on this album is about control and the loss of control. the risk of failure. but chimeric is much more free. some of the longer pieces are composed of very different parts and different colours along a continuous timeline. they tend to evolve in a narrative form and are moving through various scenes and surroundings, which is also present in the spacial relationship between the instruments.

charlie ahearn s 1983 film wild style holds a place in both music and cinematic history as one of the first examples of a hip-hop film. since its original release it has been widely praised for its hybrid approach as both a narrative musical and a documentary, and as a time capsule of sorts into the culture of hip-hop during its infancy in the 1980s.

u-roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed the originator for good reason. bursting onto the jamaican scene in the early 1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called �toasting,� which in addition to bringing jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influential on an american vocal style also in its infancy: rapping. following up the record store day 2017 release of u-roy�s classic dread in a babylon, traffic entertainment group now brings us a very welcome reissue of the vocalist�s 1976 full-length (and fourth) album, natty rebel, which has been out of print for more than 30 years. produced by tony robinson (known for his work with big youth, lloyd parks, the gladiators and many more), the album�s 11 cuts range from bouncier and sometimes even disco-tinged grooves � �have mercy,� �go there natty� and the album lead-off, �babylon burning� � to the classic roots stepping that drew fans to the legendary jamaican vocalist over his long career � including �so jay jah say� and �natty kung fu.� at its core, this is a deep journey into the heart of rasta living, spoken by one of jamaica�s most underrated dub and roots legends, and it�s one of the strongest full-lengths in his expansive catalog. whether you are experiencing u-roy for the first time, or replacing your decades-old original lp, diving into this reissue of natty rebel is one hell of a way to spend an afternoon. or, if you�re not careful, a week or two.

following on a trio of successes with established talent, for our fourth release manhigh takes an excursion to lesser-known regions with experimentalist desroi. previously known from eps on his eponymous imprint and total black the german newcomer quickly caught our attention. beginning with the opener, �indifferent�, we are introduced to his heavily sculpted, hypnotic sound world, where a rolling, repeating rhythmic framework is echoed in the higher registers with heavily-filtered delay loops, and a melodic lead line taken deeply into dub provides both a centerpiece and the basis for many other elements. another relatively new talent currently rising quickly to wider notice, phase fatale�s relaunch of �indifferent� stays resolutely in his own world, a grinding, banging amalgamation of distortion, punishing in its resolve and propelled by mutated elements of the desroi�s original piece. his idea of �apathy� invokes entirely more aggressive emotions than the word�s conventional usage, tightly winding bleeps around a rigid sequence kept in motion by constant effects and sporadic drum hits, which then transforms at is halfway point with the entrance of harder kicks driven by an open hat. �sopor� induces trance states more than it does sleep, sophisticated applications of delay effects and patient acid combine for a deep, inward-looking hypnotic state with momentary shifts in rhythm and color evoking the ephemeral nature of dreams.

following the blistering inaugural release from talker comes the second release on the standards & practices imprint from label co-founder jonathan -stave- krohn, who returns with 5 tracks of dark, visceral electronic music for the discerning listener. -black hills- and -tasc us- kick off the proceedings in fine style � pummeling drums underpinning harsh blasts of noise and bleak, greyscale atmospherics, while -in/human- and -b5- on the flip take a different approach � 2 tracks not aimed at the dancefloor, but both retaining that cold, claustrophobic feel that characterizes much of stave s work. the brooding and sinister -stave 17- closes the ep, moving into exciting new territory with an intensely cinematic sound.

hugo capablanca may be best known for his more disco-minded output from his time on gomma records, but increasingly his scattered output and his label have been reaching towards more abrasive material. nothing will prepare you for the confrontational nature of this daring, no label transmission. the artwork alone is enough to challenge the senses, while the opening track is a metallic drone that gives way to the distended mutant beats of top less. guy debord is no less cut throat in delivering a disco punish remix of lap dance on the b side, all deconstructed groove and guttural noise, and then dance less rounds the record off with another excursion into unsettling, heavily processed noise.

shdw002 arrives with a pumping kick and a gorgeous guitar loop. as the filter opens, the landscape widens � laidback percussion, then soothing strings, before a powerful hit of bass and vocals, and we�re off. two tail�s �willie has a hunch�, grooves along blissfully, before a spoken word sample comes to twist the meaning and flip the mood. �you�ve got me�, is an appropriate title for a harry parsons track where a percussive groove, staccato horns, and those handclaps grip the listener and never relinquish control the result being a thoroughly enjoyable 6 minutes of communal dancefloor goodness.
tribal percussion ushers in side b, as alex wooley begins to build �walkin� away� around a yearning and disheartened vocal sample. despite the free-flowing instrumentation, the vocals maintain a subtle air of melancholy, which anchor this track in raw, remorseful emotion. mr lover lover concludes proceedings with a confident swagger. �i would (like to get to know)� flips brandy�s �i wanna be down� into an enticing dancefloor shaker - the perfect closer.

the imprint of the french man lazare hoche returns with some super hot cuts
little is known about medicis, other than he last appeared back in 2015 on lazare hoche alongside voltery. on this, his second 12-, he strikes out on his own for the parisian deep house stable with some of that refined, head-tweaking groove fodder that has broadly defined the label since it started. -vilaroel- features shimmering tones that call to mind point g at his dubbiest, while -dissfreq- takes a sweeter route into dreamy pads and lightly shuffling drums. -carrier- is a darker, techier affair with plenty of hypnotic elements spinning in the mix, and then mdecisi old friend voltery lands a hand on the downtempo delights of -guda-.

rude operator�s dissonant intro on witchdoctor synthesizes a half-time beat with jazz undertones before bouncing into a percussive bassline. constantly evolving drum patterns, punctuated with horn bursts and upright bass from ornette hawkins, keep the dance floor moving.
gunman�s blissed-out atmospherics pave the way for a heavy combination of chopped up breakbeats and a juked-out drumline. equally influenced by early jungle and contemporary footwork, 808 percussion and congas punctuate the undulating bassline.

reissue of the highly sought after nigerian funk-rock album, moving effortlessly between reggae, jazzy afrobeat and psych rock. soundway fans first got a taste of jay-u�s infectious beats with the track �some more�, featured on the soundway compilation �nigeria disco funk special: the sound of the underground lagos dancefloor 1974-79�. originally released by emi nigeria in 1977, this now-rare album was written by jay-u and engineered by disco-boogie artist goddy oku. opening with the up-tempo reggae number �reggae deluxe�, the album descends into mind-blowing jazz-funk featuring several killer saxophone solos. the journey ends with a trip into psych-prog rock, with a sound not dissimilar to that coming out of the early 70s british rock scene.

copenhagens music for dreams comes with yet another strong release - a double album of personal favourites compiled by jan schulte. according to all maps and witness accounts, germany does not officially have any tropical forests. this is of no concern to schulte however, who has unearthed many stunning examples of tropical drum music recorded there. perhaps the number of botanical gardens and palm houses in germany confused musicians into mistaking the climate, or maybe it was just a happy blend of escapism and multi-cultural integration within musical scenes that spawned such a curious output of undefinable tribal folk jazz. most of the tracks picked by schulte were released on small labels in the late 80 s. the musicians involved were mainly traditionally schooled, born and raised in germany. at that time to be interested in foreign folk music might have seemed a gimmick to some, what with the emerging -world music boom- already snowballing into the mainstream. but these songs, while they may be based on musical traditions from foreign lands, deal much more with introspection than exploitation. schulte himself points to his -general fascination for music that describes places where the artists have never been. songs about the jungle or the rainforest made by people that know the rainforest only from television and books. somehow i think you can hear their mythical imagination and fantasy in those tracks,- he explains....

latest installment from eleve music is produced by madrid duo uanamani. derk and iterbio have been studying sound and spinning records for many years, and currently uanamani is one of the top local live acts in underground events in madrid. their analog multi-instrumental set up digs classic ambient and deep techno which morphs into a live organism, with tribal touchs from around the world. they join eleve inviting us to dive into their myths. during the journey, expect first class deep techno with bursts of reverberant hihats, syncopated percussions and harmonic wind whistlings, blurring the lines between adventure and mystery. the organic feeling is present through the whole ride with mutating arpeggios that will make the most obscure rituals go hypnotic.

the story of the great roots reggae harmony trio black uhuru is one defined by many unexpected twists and turns. in its best known form, led by michael rose and with founding member duckie simpson and the black american female vocalist, puma jones, the group would enjoy the greatest popularity of any act in the wake of bob marley�s untimely death in 1981, but the origins of the group lay in the turbulent waterhouse district during the mid-1970s. duckie first formed the group as uhuru, the swahili word for unity, with garth dennis as lead singer and don carlos to join him in harmony, after cutting an adaptation of the impressions� �romancing to the folk song� at dynamics, �time is on our side� at randy�s for clive chin, and �slow coach� for raymond �benno� anderson, dennis drifted into the wailing souls and don carlos went solo, leading duckie to recruit rising waterhouse vocalist michael �tony� rose as lead singer, and errol nelson from the jays for harmony. their debut album, love crisis, was produced, voiced and mixed at king tubby�s studio by prince jammy and remains and outstanding example of jammy�s roots reggae production phase. the song �hard ground� vamps on a similar theme to marley�s �talking blues�: rose sings of a life of everyday hardship, with destitution and homelessness the pervading factors. on the extended dub portion and dub the instrumental cuts that follow the alternate vocal take of this enthralling 12-inch ep, you can hear the non-standard instrumentation that helps make the work so innovative, with winston wright�s harpsichord melody emphasising the hopelessness of rose�s emotive lyrics, the commanding rhythm and understated bass and guitar from robbie shakespeare and chinna smith completing the picture.
